Card Sort

Six participants ranging in age from 22-32 years old. There were four male and 2 female subjects. 2 were from the United States, 1 from India and 3 were from Bangladesh.  5 currently reside in the United States (4 in Michigan and 1 in New York) and 1 in Bangladesh. All were students except one who was a housewife.

Features suggested and given top priority in the crowdsourcing survey were used as the 14 items to be sorted by participants into 2 categories; a main screen/menu category and sub menu category.

An interesting trend quickly appeared in the card sort.    The only item that every single participant said should be on the main screen/menu was “offer safest location at time”, a feature one person from the 59 previously surveyed had suggested. A suggestion that turned out to be a very important function to most users, with most placing it in the top 3 slots of the main screen/menu.

All participants thought strict privacy features and send current location belonged on a submenu not the main screen/menu. Most participants (4 or more) felt that a ‘call 911’ button (5), disaster alert (5), ‘help me’ option (5), ‘follow me’ option (4) and send current location to specific contact list (4) belonged on the main screen/menu.  They also thought the turn on/off button for automatic tracking (5), reminders to call (4), automatic voice recording (4) and a list of resources (4) should be on a submenu not the main screen/menu. The ‘I am safe’ button (3) and current weather conditions (3) could go on either the main screen/menu or the submenu according to potential users, as participants were equally divided.
